| Raising Heritage Foundation Steer |
| “I’ve raised a lot of animals for the Salinas Valley Fair and it is a privilege for me to raise this steer and give something back,” said Mollie Dorrance, who is raising the Heritage Foundation steer that will be auctioned off at the Fair with the proceeds going to the Salinas Valley Fair Heritage Foundation. Mollie was chosen from among 10 applicants for the scholarship that is part of raising the animal. Mollie receives $1,500 from the Heritage Foundation and has all her expenses paid for the steer.
A senior at Salinas High School and a member of Salinas High FFA, Mollie said, “I’ve been raising steers since I was nine and in 4-H.” And over the years she raised quite a few rabbits, too, although she no longer does that. “At one time I had 180 rabbits and we showed at the national level.”
Mollie also spends a good part of her time with her horse. She is Carmel Valley Ranchers Day queen and does a lot of riding and competition. For her community service she participates in the Monterey County Agricultural Education’s Farm Day, volunteers for Taste of the Valley and the Streets of Bethlehem Christmas pageant. While in FFA, in addition to her animals, Mollie has participated in Opening and Closing Ceremonies, served as chapter sentinel and treasurer and attended two state conventions. “FFA is my life right now at Salinas High.” After graduation Mollie wants to attend either Texas A&M or Colorado State and major in agricultural business and animal science. “Then I want to come back to this area and work in marketing in the wine industry.” Mollie is the daughter of Steve and Leslie Dorrance. |
