About the Loring H Burns Award

Black and white photo, possibly 1950s, of LH Burns mailing fair guidebooks.

LH Burns, First Salinas Valley Fair Manager

Since 1961, the Salinas Valley Fair has awarded the L.H. Burns Award to the Monterey County 4-H club that has the greatest participation at the annual Salinas Valley Fair.

L.H.Burns served as the first Salinas Valley Fair Secretary/Manager and was an enthusiastic advocate of the 4-H youth development program. The LH Burns award was established in his memory following his death in 1960 by his wife, Marcia N. Burns. His grandson, Robert “Bob” Mansfield, has continued the family tradition of donating $500 for this annual prize, since his grandmother’s death in 1975.

This year, Bob is donating $600. Despite there not being a fair in May of 2020, Bob is pleased to sponsor this award to promote the 4-H experience and reward a 4-H club by telling their story. Bob is looking forward to watching your videos! Let’s show him how much 4-H continues to be relevant youth organization and a positive impact on our community.
